Freshman year... where to begin? I remember the day I got my acceptance letter to Auburn. The first thing I did was scream (of course). I had been to Auburn hundreds of times visiting my older brother and attending all the football games I could. I am only in my second semester of freshman year and I have already learned so much more about myself than I ever thought I would...
The first thing I learned when I got to Auburn is how much I took for granted.
I miss having a home-cooked meal every night, I miss being able to hardly study and still ace my high school tests, I miss snuggling with my dog, and it's gotten to the point where I even miss pointless fights with my sister about washing the dishes. When you're at home, always make sure to tell your parents that you love them and truly appreciate everything they ever did for you. Being in college definitely makes you see things in a totally different light.

One of the biggest things I figured out was that I'm not that great at time management. You never realize how much free time you're going to have in college until you get here. How to spend that free time was the biggest problem for me. My grades first semester were pretty rough because I wanted to spend more time with my friends instead of at the library. I thought tests in college would be just as easy as high school. I also accidentally took a Chinese biology professor and I could never understand a word she said. My lesson to you is: USE "RATE MY PROFESSOR". THEY ARE NOT LYING WHEN THEY SAY CHINESE BIOLOGY IS IMPOSSIBLE. My other lesson is: do not be afraid to drop a class and pick a new one during the first week of classes. I was so scared that I would be too far behind but I promise you it's so easy!
The next thing I learned is that dorm life is impossible. So impossible. Don't get me wrong, I love my roommate. We did not know each other at all before moving in together but it still worked out perfectly. (Honestly, I suggest not living with your best friend, we've all heard the horror stories). The impossible part is trying to sleep in a tiny bed, not being able to control the temperature of the room, hearing your hall-neighbors have dance parties at 3 AM when you have an exam the next morning, and trying to keep a bathroom clean when you share it with three other girls. To better equip yourselves, I suggest hand-held fans and earplugs. And prayers that your future roomie doesn't snore.

The last thing I can say is to find someone in college that can make even your worst days better. It doesn't even have to be a real person, bring a stuffed animal or a picture that makes you smile. You need this person/memento to remind yourself that there is someone out there who loves you and wants to see you do well here, and use that as your motivation. I was lucky enough to be able to bring my boyfriend with me to Auburn and to quickly make friends that make me just as happy as my family does. You have to kinda make your own little second family here, so you won't ever be too homesick. I know making friends isn't easy for everyone, but trust me its not impossible.
Talk to that one kid in class, go to all those really lame freshman events, don't be afraid to make fun of yourself, GO ANYWHERE THAT SAYS FREE FOOD, join an intramural sports team, go to youth group, and for the love of God call your mommy at least once a week.
